Little Girl Lost, came from something I saw on TV. It was a program about two girls, teenage cousins from Ohio, who were on their way to get ice cream, but instead were kidnapped! It was raining and getting dark when a man and woman in a car pulled up beside them. The man offered them a ride. He looked like the father of one of their friends so they got in.

But he was actually a pimp with a long rap sheet of violent offenses. The girls were kept locked in a house during the day and then taken to motels at night where they were coerced into having sex with strangers. They were threatened with bodily harm if they didn't cooperate and told that the pimp would go after their families if they tried to escape.

Side of the Road -picture

Days later, they were transported across state lines and taken to truck stops where they were forced to prostitute themselves to truck drivers. The girls were eventually found and reunited with their families, but most victims of human trafficking aren't so lucky. I couldn't get the story out of my head. I researched the topic and discovered that a large number of teenage runaways fall victim to predators. It's believed that some 300,000 minors under the age of 18 are either lured or forced into the sex trade every year by traffickers and pimps.

The more I learned, the more I thought a human trafficking investigation would make a good backdrop for a romantic thriller. I decided my heroine, Ali, would be a youth librarian from upstate NY trying to track down a 13-year-old runaway. Ali's a former foster kid who's struggled to make a life for herself. I decided on her background after seeing another TV show about how difficult life is for foster kids who age out of the system. How many of them turn to drugs and the street. Ali runs programs for at-risk teens and preschoolers at her library. The girl she's after, a foster kid too, participated in one of the programs. Ali is investigating what happened to the girl when she runs afoul of a Wyoming county sheriff. They clash, but put their differences aside to work together to solve a series of abductions and murders Little Girl Lost.

A dark, gritty post-apocalyptic tale of love, loathing, & survival!

Alex, her sisters, and their kids are on their way to her camp in the Adirondack Mountains for the Columbus Day weekend when the unthinkable happens. A voice on the radio warns the country is under attack! Greeted by guns and bullets when they try to seek shelter, they're forced to hide in a cave to wait out the fallout.

After two weeks in their dank hole, Alex wakes up one morning to discover her sisters gone. They've taken the rented minibus and returned to the city to search for their husbands, leaving Alex to care for her 7 nieces and nephews. It's an arduous 35-mile hike through the mountains to her camp…a journey through hell!

Society is devolving. The strong: looters, murderers, and rapists; preying on the weak. The small hamlets and villages they pass through have become killing fields, as survivors battle each other for the few remaining supplies. Above them, the skies are growing darker every day, blocking out the sun. Temperatures are plummeting. Winter is coming early.

Along the way, Alex rescues two starving orphans whose mother was murdered by marauders. In her struggle to keep the children alive, Alex stumbles on a hidden cache of food only to discover it's guarded by a man who'll haunt her nightmares. Half guardian angel, half demon. Both barbarian and benefactor. A strange mixture of brutality and gentleness, cruelty and caring. A man named Wolf!
