One of the most exciting aspects of writing Shadowed Skies was bringing River Shaw and Delene Fairborne to life. These two characters come from vastly different backgrounds but share a common struggle—survival in a world that sees them as expendable. In this post, I’ll take you deeper into their journeys, what drives them, and how their paths intertwine.
River Shaw: The Survivor
River Shaw has spent years living off the grid, avoiding capture by the people who seek to exploit Evol-humans like him. He’s resourceful, intelligent, and deeply protective of his freedom. Growing up under the guidance of his father and twin brother, he learned to hunt, navigate the wilderness, and evade those who wish to harm him. But solitude has come at a cost—River struggles to trust others, and opening his heart is far more dangerous than facing any physical threat.
What Drives Him?
The memory of his lost twin brother, Porter, fuels his determination to survive.
A deep-seated fear of being caged and used as a lab experiment.
A need to prove that his kind deserves more than to be hunted and discarded.
Delene Fairborne: The Fighter
Unlike River, Delene hasn’t had the luxury of hiding. She’s been a prisoner for most of her life, subjected to inhumane experiments and forced to endure suffering most wouldn’t survive. Yet, she refuses to be broken. Delene is fiercely intelligent, strong-willed, and, above all, defiant. When she finally escapes captivity, she’s not just running for her life—she’s fighting for the right to exist on her own terms.
