Hi everyone. Today I am going to talk about a big choice the my character Ïstan faced when the empire fell. This hasn't been released into books yet and will be touched on majorly with the novels. But if you remember my story from Tales of Ferrês in "Mëira's Prince," you got to see how they met. In this post you get to see how they became separated by politics and destruction of a powerful empire. Forgive any typos but this is written without being shown to an editor. Hope you enjoy it.

I is for Ïstan's & Mëira's Choice
The forest was dark this night more than usual. It seemed like the very sky felt the horror of this day and how things have shifted for the riders. Ïstan ran as fast as possible to her side, hoping no one has found her. But it was hard to keep her safe with how easily she stood out in the wild of the trees. The only thing he could pray to the goddess for was that those loyal to him wouldn’t touch her without his consent.
His ears strained against the wind flying past him as he picked up the sound of voices on the wind. It sounded like Mëira was close but someone was hunting her. Ïstan put on a burst of speed, hoping he would make it to her side in time. Then he burst through the trees, standing tall in the ground protecting her like a fortress and came to a stop when he looked at his father’s back. Mëira stood before his father, the king of Vladimir with her head held high.
Ïstan gasped for air.
“Father, what are you doing here?” he gasped between breaths. His eyes danced between his father’s figure and the two guards that stood at the ready in the tree's shadow line.
Victor turned to look at his son. The two guards raised their arrows and aimed them at Ïstan until the king waved them off.
“I come to give you a choice?” he said calmly.
Mëira shifted in the shadows with her bright gold scales sparkling in the night’s light. Ïstan did not know what choice his father was talking about. All he knew was that he needed to hide Mëira before the kingdom turned on them, too.
“What choice is that my king?” Mëira hissed between clenched teeth.
Victor looked between the two and sighed. “I never wanted to do this to you two. You two have been a great power to have under our control for the last hundred years. But with the fall of the empire, we have to make sacrifices. The dragons can’t stay here in Vladimir or anywhere anymore. Riders must be removed permanently to protect what remains of our lands.”
Ïstan couldn’t believe what his father was saying. He was a dragon rider. What was his father going to do? Exile him, dispose of him like trash, or worse kill him and his dragon.
“What are you saying, father?” Ïstan said with hesitation in his voice.
Victor turned to look him in the eyes.
“You need to send her away. Your place is here with your people. But if she remains I will be forced to destroy her. It’s your people or your dragon Ïstan, make your choice.”
He froze in shock at his father’s words. Ïstan looked at Mëira, knowing his heart called to her but he was the future of his people. How could he turn his back on those that he swore to protect?
“How can I guarantee you won’t kill her with any choice I make?”
Victor narrowed his eyes.
“I am your father. There is nothing I would do that isn’t to protect you and your bonded. This is the only way to save her. Send her away with the others into exile, but you must remain here.”
Ïstan looked to Mëira for guidance but she wasn’t forthcoming with words to him. He saw the betrayal in her eyes. She never expected him to be betrayed by his father, let alone himself. But he felt like he had little a choice.
He stepped around his father and walked up to Mëira. Ïstan placed his hand on her gemstone and tears filled his eyes. “I can’t come with you. My people need me just like yours will need you. Please forgive me but it’s the only way to save your life.”
Mëira blinked and a single dragon tear fell from her eye and landed on the soil, creating a crystal at his feet. She nudged him, then stepped back to look at all that betrayed her and opened her wings to fling herself into the air. Ïstan felt something inside him break that day and he could never forgive his father for the choice he made. The duties of a prince were always hard, but this was the hardest choice to make. Standing in the shadows of the trees while his golden dragon flew off towards Zorron forever.
