AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH SUSANNA EASTMAN
Thank you for joining us today here on The Dungeon Crawler’s Blog. We like to let every author start things off by introducing themselves.
Hi, I’m Susanna Eastman, and I write sci-fi alien and contemporary romances.
Every author has a unique story to their journey in the writing industry. Can you tell us why you started writing and how you became an author for the first time?
I grew up in the Washington, DC, area and dabbled with writing fiction for as long as I can remember. To improve, I took a creative writing class my senior year of high school. The teacher was tough and heavily critiqued everyone’s work. When a classmate asked if he liked anyone’s story, he replied, “Yes, I liked Susanna’s.” That little comment began my journey to pursue a writing career. In college, I majored in communications, and for more than two decades I worked as a corporate communications writer/editor. I loved interviewing people and turning their stories and information into something other people want to read. When I turned back to writing fiction, I realized I loved it, and there was nowhere else I wanted to be. I’ve published romances with The Wild Rose Press, Loose-Id and independently.
Right now, you have a special project inside the pages of one of our box sets. That box set is titled, “Beyond Starlight”. Can you tell us a little bit about your story?
This story takes place thousands of years in the future:
In a perilous galaxy, intergalactic trader Jaden Zoma rescues Mia Townes from sex slave traders. Before Jaden is able to return Mia to the home and family she loves, he goes into sexual heat.
Your story in our box set, “Beyond Starlight” must have a unique main character or duo in your story. Can you tell us about her/he or them?
Jaden, from the planet Vanta, runs an intergalactic trading business with two of his brothers. He is also a member of a coalition that saves females from sex slavers. He lives a mostly solitary life and abides by a code of honor.
Mia lives on Delphus, a planet many Earthlings moved to after Earth became uninhabitable. She’s a brand-new schoolteacher who is devoted to a family that adores her.
What is the main theme of your story in the box set, “Beyond Starlight?”
I’d say it’s a couple of things: resilience and survival, trust and dependency, and unexpected love.
Do you have a certain technique to your writing style? What is your writing style like?
I like to get to know my characters first. They help me tell the story. Because I spent 20+ years as a corporate writer (and was once one of the “grammar ladies” at work), I’m a bit obsessive about grammar and punctuation. I spend way too much time deciding if a comma is truly necessary or not.
If you could give another author advice what would the top three things you would share with them to help them in their journey as an author?
-Find critique partners you trust.
-Set a deadline—even if it’s just for you.
-Write about characters you love.
Share three things about your personal life you don’t mind our readers knowing about?
-My husband and I met during college; he was a brainiac at MIT, and I went to Simmons College.
-During covid, I went from having one (tiny) houseplant to more than 70.
-I survived a plane crash—seriously. I was a passenger on World Airways flight 30, landing (in the harbor) in Boston in 1982.
As all good things come to an end what would you like to leave our audience with for future thoughts about your writing, your author career, or you as a person? Please share.
I love writing, and I hope it shows. I plan to keep writing sci-fi and contemporary romances. Currently, I’m writing two sci-fi series: Heat and Heart Bond. (I’m eager to write a sci-fi prison planet series in the future.) I also have a contemporary romance series called Someone Like Him. All characters in Someone Like Him stories meet at or are connected to an uber exclusive sex club.

I was a public relations writer before I turned to romantic fiction. While I enjoyed working in the corporate world, it was more fun to write about the sexy characters in my head.
I was fortunate to meet my personal romance hero during college. We met at a fraternity party my freshman year at school and became fast friends. One night I was eating dinner at his fraternity, and my future husband suavely sat on an empty table beside me to chat.
Unfortunately, that table was missing a leg and it collapsed on my arm. When he called the next day to check on me, I had to tell him my arm was broken. (It was!) Devastated but still gallant, he asked me out on a date. We’ve now been married more than a few decades and have two teenage sons.
