A Letter Goodbye & First Steps to the Future

Writing in a Journal Image

Hello, my name’s Danielle Forrest, and today I’m sharing a little something (with permission) written by Jules O’Shea.

Dear Dad,

I miss you so much.  It was so hard going through all your things.  You wouldn’t believe it, but I cried.  I actually cried.

Every single thing I touched was a struggle.

What do I keep?

What do I get rid of?

In the end, I only kept four things: the jacket you always wore, the teddy bear grandma and grandpa gave you when you were a baby, the knife you always kept with you (because it’s always handy to have a knife around, right?), and that wallet you’d repaired so many times it was more stitches than leather.

And you probably don’t want to hear this, but after I finished, I didn’t know what to do.  I hate to say it but you left a gaping hole in my life, one I didn’t know how to move around.  It was like the floor had fallen apart in the middle of a room and you couldn’t get around it to get to the other side.

But how else can you feel when you lose a parent, your only parent?

Right?

I know you wanted more from me, and I’m sure you’d hate me taking early retirement from the military, but I just couldn’t do it anymore.  I needed a change.

And boy did I do it cuz guess what, Dad?  I didn’t just retire.  I actually signed up for a matching service.  It’s such a bad idea, but let’s be real.  Dating sucks.  And maybe this will, too, but what the hell.  At least it’ll be an adventure, right?  We’ve always loved our adventures.

Anyway, wish me luck, and I hope you’d doing well wherever you are.

You’re loving daughter,

Julie

I am a scientist, a dog parent, and part-time author of SciFi Romance. I love happy endings and using my biology degree in ways it was absolutely not intended. That means a lot of "interesting" alien biology as well as thoughtful world building.

But that's not the only reason to enjoy my writing. I also like writing diverse characters (LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, and more) and (because I'm an author and what more can you expect from me?) throwing them into mortal peril every time it makes sense for the plot (which is sadly nowhere NEAR as often as I would like).

If that sounds like something that's up your alley, click the link below. You'll find free books (through my mailing list), early access and free short stories/bonus scenes (through my Ream page), my book list, and all my social medias. I hope to hear from you soon.

Zenhan wanted nothing more than to do his job. It was his passion. He lived for it. But his brother, and now his boss, had other ideas. They thought he needed a break.

Except, a vacation wasn't the only plans his brother had made for him. He'd signed Zenhan up with a matchmaking agency, and his new mate was going to meet him there.

Their meeting goes badly enough, but the icing on the cake?

Finding a weapons cache in the quaint little cabin they're expected to stay in...
